Solar Energy NOW: There is no time like NOW to go solar!

Solar energy NOW is a No-Brainer!  As the world’s need for clean and efficient energy increases and the world’s supply of oil and natural gas inevitably decline, pursuing sources of renewable energy has never been more important. One renewable asset that could meet our energy needs for many years to come is solar power.

Why Move to Solar?

We can easily convert sunlight into power with modern technology. This is not a difficult process. But an even more attractive feature of solar energy is that the sun’s energy is free. If we used the sun as our primary energy source, we could stop worrying about future oil and natural gas shortages and lower our utility costs as well.

Why aren’t we moving faster towards this obvious solution? Here are some “no brainers” to think about as you consider installing solar energy panels on your home or business:

  1. The sun is a near-infinite source of energy.  One recent study found that 25,000 square miles of solar panels (an area roughly the size of West Virginia) would generate enough electricity to power the entire world. By investing in solar power, each and every home and business owner can help take advantage of the sun’s abundant resources and bring the United States one step closer to energy independence.
  2. According to the US Department of Energy, solar power is more affordable, accessible and prevalent in the US than ever before. Since 2008, U.S. installations have grown seventeen-fold from 1.2 gigawatts (GW) to an estimated 30 GW today, enough to power the equivalent of 5.7 million average American homes. Since 2010, the average cost of solar PV panels has dropped more than 60% and the cost of a solar electric system has dropped by about 50%.
  3. Global energy markets are historically unstable, and price fluctuations can have a serious impact on the U.S. economy. When we expand our capacity to generate solar electricity within the U.S., however, we also insulate ourselves from those price fluctuations and ensure a sustainable source of energy for the future. Even Saudi Arabia, one of the world’s largest oil producers, recognizes the economic and political benefits of solar energy: in 2012, the country announced a goal to build 41 gigawatts of solar capacity by 2032.

We are Making Great Progress

According to Solar Energies Industry Association (SEIA), the millionth home solar panel system was installed in the United States this year. On May 3, 2016, the Association’s website states “It took us 40 years to get to 1 million solar systems around the country, but it will take us only 2 years to get the next 1 million systems. Those 1 million installations today generate enough electricity to power more than 5.5 million American homes. With continued growth in solar, America will generate enough electricity to power 20 million homes by 2020.”  Will your home or business be next?

Each state is moving forward with solar energy installations in its own way and at its own pace, but it is clear that the future of solar energy is assured and that utility companies are adapting to consumers who have solar panel systems of their own which need to interface with the power grid that services the larger community. There are tax incentives and user- friendly policies in place in all fifty states to help make solar energy an expanding resource for both home and business owners seeking inexpensive, reliable and non-polluting sources of energy for both now and the future.
